School Crossing Patrol Training

There are over 240 School Crossing Patrol locations situated in and around County Durham. The staff who man these crossing points brave all weathers to ensure that our children can cross busy roads safely on their way to and from school.

School Crossing Patrol

School Crossing Patrols are managed on a day-to-day basis by the Environment Road Safety Section. The team is responsible for the recruitment and selection of new staff; training of new staff and refresher training for existing staff; daily supervision; site surveys and risk assessments.

Did you know? School Crossing Patrols have the authority to stop traffic for anyone who needs assistance to cross a busy road.

It is also an offence to fail to stop when a School Crossing Patrol displays the stop sign. The School Crossing Patrol displaying the stop sign has the same authority as a Police Officer to stop traffic. It is also very dangerous to fail to stop for the stop sign as it puts vulnerable road users at risk. School Crossing Patrol staff are instructed to report any driver who fails to stop to the Police, and this could result in prosecution.
