Child Pedestrian Safety

Children are very vulnerable as pedestrians. They lack the skills, knowledge and experience of adults and are therefore at risk when out and about. We campaign at regular intervals to get the message across to parents and drivers that young children cannot be held responsible for their own actions and safety. We, as adults, must look out for them. We are now very involved in practical training for child pedestrians and this is reaping huge rewards.

Parents, never let young children out near the road alone.

County wide 'Child Pedestrian Training Scheme'

Following a hugely succesful training scheme in the Easington District area, where child casualties were twice the County average, the County Council introduced a child pedestrian training scheme in October 2007, which is offered in all primary schools. The scheme, which is funded through the Specific Road Safety Grant (SRSG), means that the council has an excellent chance to beat its 2010 targets for this particular casualty group earlier than expected. This will be achieved through the pedestrian training scheme and other measures such as education, and engineering measures in specific areas. These combined measures meant that during the period 2003 to 2006, child casualites in Easington District fell by 57% and it is hoped that the success of the rolled out scheme will enable similar reductions in all other areas of the County.
