Access & Rights of Way Section

Our team of dedicated staff oversee the management of the Public Rights of Way network and Open Access Land in County Durham. To name but a few of our functions, we look after the Definitive Map, provide advice to the public and landowners, liase with other Councils and organisations, assist in the training of volunteer path wardens, carry out practical works on paths, and administrate public path orders.

How we Manage the Network

The County is divided up into parishes, and each parish has its own numbered public path network. This means that the thousands of paths in the County can be clearly identified, as each one has its own code, e.g Footpath 1 Barnard Castle, Bridleway 17 Bearpark, or Byway 2 Murton.

Clusters of parishes form Areas, and there are currently 6 Areas in the County, each with its own Rights of Way Officer.

In the first instance it is recommended that members of the public contact the relevant Area Officer for all enquiries.
