Dyslexia Support Group

About six years ago, one of the first developments of the newly established Parent Partnership Service was to create a dyslexia support group, where parents could meet and find out more about their child’s dyslexia. Since its inception the group has seen hundreds of parents come and go, learning from guest speakers and from discussions with other parents and teachers.

The subsequent support for schools in the form of a county policy on Specific Learning Difficulties, the superb work of Mary Coffield and her specialist advisory team plus the ongoing drive to make Durham a Dyslexia Friendly County, has resulted in a vast reduction in the numbers of parents seeking support from the group. We therefore feel that it’s time to reshape our parent support.

Having consulted with parents, from September 2006 we are ceasing the monthly dyslexia support group meetings in favour of a 10 week rolling programme of dyslexia training for parents entitled ‘Dyslexia SOS’. This course, free for parents, will be delivered on our behalf by the Community Education Service. We will continue to offer regular one-off dyslexia training events involving guest speakers/innovative practice, as and when required.

To discuss these changes, request a place on the next dyslexia SOS course or to suggest a future training session topic, please call the PP office TEL: 0191 5873541.

Dyslexia SOS Course - September 2006

Parent Partnership has again teamed up with the Community Education Service to offer a repeat of this useful course, which will run during daytime as before. This is a ten week programme aimed at giving parents a better understanding of dyslexia and strategies to support their child’s learning.

The course will be held at County Hall, Durham on Thursday afternoons between 12.45pm and 2.45pm. and is free to parents. The first session takes place on 14 September 2006.

There are 15 places available on a first come, first served basis. For further information or to book a place please contact Julie or Ann TEL: 0191 5873541.
