Documents on this website are generally available as Portable Document Format (PDF) files for users to download, although there is some statistical information available in Rich Text Format (RTF).

Durham County Council uses PDF for downloadable documents because this format can be easily accessed using a product called Adobe Acrobat Reader. The Adobe Acrobat Reader software 'plug-in' can be downloaded from the Adobe website free of charge, and in many cases, our users may already have the correct software installed on their computer.

In accordance with good practice guidelines from the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) we aim to provide a plain text summary of all PDF documents. Adobe Acrobat Access presents an alternative view of PDF documents for blind and vision impaired users, it works as a supplement to the standard reader.
