Kingfisher and Finchale Priory Footbridges
These two footbridges have recently been completed at total cost of £182,000 to improve access for people keen to walk for short journeys locally in Durham. The cost was met from the Local Transport Plan budget.
Kingfisher Bridge was built to span the Old Durham Beck where it meets the river Wear and replaces a historic stepping stone crossing point washed away some years ago. The bridge enables walkers and wheelchair users to navigate a circular route from the city centre and also improves access to Houghall College, Maiden Castle and Shincliffe Village.
Finchale Priory Bridge was an existing bridge in need of refurbishment to improve its safety and had been closed for two months while the work was carried out. It provides a footway access to the Priory from the north side of the River Wear.
