Capital Settlement 2008/09
In total an impressive £17.633 million for Year 3 of LTP2.
Of the £14.563 million, around £5.3 million is for improving and developing transport and £9.3 million is to be used to maintain our extensive network of roads and bridges.
However, whilst very welcome, this annual settlement from the Government is never enough to do everything we feel is needed in supporting public transport, improving road safety and promoting walking and cycling. We are always looking for ways to make sure our money stretches as far as possible by attracting other investment. For example, whilst we upgrade bus stations and bus stops and mark out bus lanes, the bus operators work with us by introducing more efficient and low floor buses into the fleet.
The solution to better transport in the county is not just about providing the physical works such as footpaths, cycle-tracks and faster bus routes. It's also about offering alternatives to using the car for short journeys and so we need you to think about your travel choice and a real change in attitude towards using more sustainable forms of transport.
We all know it's good for the environment to reduce traffic, congestion and pollution from so many vehicles, but not only that, it improves your own health in leaps and bounds if you walk and cycle just that bit more!
Of course, some people do need to use the car for all journeys but most people could probably easily think about leaving it at home for those frequent short journeys we all make on a daily basis.
In addition the DfT has also confirmed the improvement and maintenance investment we can expect for the following two years 2009/10 and 2010/11. The encouraging news is that this will be a year on year increase on the 08/09 figure:
| 2008/09 | 2009/10 | 2010/11 | |
| Funding Total (£) | 14,563,000 | 15,307,000 | 16,158,000 |
