The Reference, Family History and Local Studies collection is situated on the first floor of the library and offers the following services and facilities:

  • Family history resources including the IGI, the GRO index of births, marriages and deaths 1837 - 2004, County Durham census records 1841 - 1901, the Durham Advertiser 1814 to date and the Durham Chronicle 1820 - 1951, trade directories and some parish registers.

  • Foreign Newspapers including, Le Monde, El Pais, Die Welt, La Repubblica, Dziennik Polski.

  • Historical Maps for sale.

  • Local Studies collection containing over 11,000 books, pamphlets, newspaper cuttings, periodical articles and ephemera.
  • Newsbank (online newspaper archive).
  • Newspapers The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Independent, The Financial Times, Northern Echo, Sunderland Echo, The Journal, The Evening Chronicle, The Daily Mail. The Times and Sunday Times on CD ROM from 1995 and The Northern Echo from 1996.
