Landscape Section

The Landscape Section is part of the Design and Conservation Group of Durham County Council's Environment Service based in County Hall, Durham City.


The Section includes Landscape Architects, a Landscape Planner and a Landscape Manager who provide a range of services including:

Landscape Design

We are involved in the design and implementation of a range of County Council and Partnership Projects including the landscaping of road schemes, schools and business parks and prestige developments such Netpark at Sedgefield.

We are also involved in the design of urban renewal schemes in partnership with others including the new Urban & Rural Renaissance Initiative

Landscape Planning

We provide specialist advice on landscape issues to Planning Policy and Development Control teams in the County Council and District Councils on topics as varied as mineral workings, wind energy developments, transport, housing and industry.

We have undertaken a detailed Landscape Character Assessment of the County and recently produced a Landscape Strategy. We're currently developing Landscape Guidelines. See the Durham Landscape page for further details.

Landscape Conservation

We provide advice on landscape conservation issues to the County Council and District Councils, to government agencies and non-governmental organsiations, and to farmers, land managers and members of the public. We are currently involved in the restoration of the 18th Century Parklands of Hardwick Park.

We formed the County Durham Hedgerow Partnership and provide funding for hedgerow restoration through the Field Boundary Restoration Grant Scheme. We also offer grants for small scale tree planting during Tree Week.
