The Hedgerow Regulations 1997 were introduced to protect important hedgerows in the countryside. It is the responsibility of the Local Planning Authorities to administer the hedgerow protection system. Durham County Council does not administer the Regulations, but we can provide general advice concerning the Regulations. Anyone wishing to remove a hedgerow, should contact their local planning authority:
