Members of Parliament

What is an MP?

An MP, or Member of Parliament, is elected by local people to represent them in the House of Commons at Westminster. Whereas a County Councillor represents a particular electoral division, MPs represent larger areas called parliamentary constituencies.

County Durham has six parliamentary constituencies:

  • Bishop Auckland
  • City of Durham
  • Easington
  • North Durham
  • North West Durham
  • Sedgefield
Parliamentary elections are held every four to five years, when the whole country re-elects its MPs in a General Election. The last General Election was on 5 May 2005.
