Gender Equality Scheme

Durham County Council is committed to promoting equality and diversity in the way we provide services, employ people and involve people in decision making.

The Gender Equality Duty, which is part of the Equality Act 2006, requires us to produce a Gender Equality Scheme to show how we will:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination
  • Eliminate harassment
  • Promote equality of opportunity between men and women

Gender includes everyone and our Gender Equality Scheme is a scheme for women, men, girls and boys. It also specifically includes transgender people.

Please see below for a copy of our Gender Equality Scheme, which shows the steps we will take to positively promote gender equality and eliminate sex discrimination. In developing the scheme we took into account consultation with employees, service users, other relevant bodies and members of communities across County Durham. We know that priorities and circumstances change and we will regularly review our scheme to ensure that it continues to be relevant to the people's needs.
