Putting Learning first in the Community

Vision Statement

Education in the Community endeavours to enable and support individuals, groups and communities to access Lifelong Learning, so that people will feel valued, reach their full potential and become active citizens.

Did you Know?

  • The County Council spends £3.8 million per year on Education in the Community.
  • Education in the Community Supports 250 youth and community organisations.
  • Education in the Community provided learning opportunities for families across the County.
  • Education in the Community enables the community use of schools through its shared use schemes.

In the Past Year

  • For the third consecutive year the Youth Service achieved improved performance in relation to the number of young people we reached. By the end of the year we had contacted 10,429 or 23% of all teenagers in County Durham.
  • In addition we worked with 1136 young people aged 11-12 or 20+. Overall that is a total of 11,565 different young people.
  • 610 young people enrolled onto the Duke of Edinburgh's Award supported by Education in the Community.
  • 17,157 adults attended learning opportunities provided by Education in the Community.
  • 4000 people have taken part in basic education programmes provided by Education in the Community.
  • 450 learners passed the National Tests in Literacy or Numeracy.
  • 26 adults gained the Level 3 Certificate in Youth and Community Work through the Education in the Community Initial Training Programme.
  • 300 dyslexic learners benefited from specialist learning opportunities delivered by the Education in the Community Service.

A More Flexible Service

  • Education in the Community is committed to raising standards in its provision for young people and adults.
  • Education in the Community will establish a Virtual Learning Environment for learners and staff to use.
  • Education in the Community will maintain its Pledge to young people.
