Durham Sky Bowl
"Hovering on the horizon, a haunting image floating over Durham City - a must-see attraction".
This is the vision for a new piece of world-class public art that would sit on a hillside in parkland at Aykley Heads, Durham. The giant 'Sky Bowl' is the preferred piece of art which is currently being considered to bridge the historic past and the future.
This valuable addition to high quality public art in the region would be an ambitious but worthwhile project which will help increase the profile of the city, county and region.
This iconic work will make a positive statement locally, regionally, nationally and internationally and enable Durham to make a major contribution to contemporary cultural heritage.
Although the concept has been agreed, it could only ever become a reality if external funding is attracted and the practical implications of the scheme are explored and overcome. Naturally, consultation with a wide range of organisations and local people will be a focus in our work over the coming months.
