Brass Bands
Durham County Council has always had an enduring relationship with brass bands. The brass band movement has been part of the fabric of many of our mining communities for well over a century, and is as much a part of our history as the mines and miners themselves.
We support our brass bands in several ways:
- Most of them apply for our £512 Annual Support Grant which is a very useful sum to help with running costs.
- Twice a year we arrange a Young People's Brass Band workshop to which we invite well-known professional players to instruct and encourage our young brass band-musicians.
- During the summer months a number of bands are invited to give open-air concerts to picnickers in the grounds of the Durham Light Infantry Museum, in Durham.
