Sculpture in the Park

Between 2003 and 2006 the County Council delivered an exciting, unique art and landscape project in collaboration with Commissions North - the region’s public art commissions’ agency, and supported by the Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts. Activities and events included an outstanding collection of outdoor sculptures, work with local schools and artists, a family sculpture day, and guest lectures from visiting artists.

Durham Coalfield Project

Since 1999 we have been a key partner in the Durham Coalfield project which has been co-ordinated by the Side Gallery. In one of the most ambitious photographic projects the region has seen for several years, Side Gallery has launched a programme of commissions, residencies, community and children’s workshops, documenting contemporary stories, lives and landscapes in the Durham Coalfield as it adjusts to life after coal. Side Gallery is part of Amber Film & Photography Collective and The Durham Coalfield Project has grown out of the group’s film making in East Durham – Amber’s last three feature films, Eden Valley, The Scar and Like Father (commissioned by the BBC) were all set in East Durham. Coalfield Stories brings together ‘work in progress’ from five of the photographers involved in an exhibition that explains the work and opens up on some of the strikingly powerful, emerging photography.

Exhibitions

Exhibitions of work by artists and makers are held in many venues across County Durham, including the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) Museum & Durham Art Gallery and Bishop Auckland Town Hall. There are also programmes of exhibitions, events and regular classes at many of the venues, ranging from basket making, textiles and embroidery, painting and sculpture, to cater for all ages and inclinations.
