Building Schools for the Future

Building Schools for the Future (BSF) is the government's initiative for improved secondary school buildings to support educational reform.

The government is committed to devolve about £3 billion in 2005/6 to local education authorities (LEAs) and schools to spend on maintaining and improving their school buildings. In the first year BSF is worth £2.2 billion and will ensure secondary school pupils in every part of England learn in 21st Century facillities. The programme is estimated to take 10-15 years.

In County Durham the BSF programme will be achieived in four phases amounting to some estimated £400m of Capital Investment.

In a unique scheme the County Council's Arts Development Team with the support of the Arts Council England, North East have appointed an artist and architect - Sans Facon to work with the BSF development team to bring a new and creative approach to the project and the individuals that work on the scheme. It is intended that the intervention of the artists will bring a new dimension to and promote wider issues around, the development of a high quality educational environment. The artists will work with the BSF Design Task Group as creative thinkers and commentators influencing the design and planning stages.
