It’s not always easy to stand up and tell us what you think. But if you don’t, how can we know what you want, or how you feel?
You are always welcome to attend our meetings where you can speak with the Chairman's agreement during the public part of the agenda. The calenders of meetings are on the information pages for each Committee or Sub-Committee and you can access these from the links at the bottom of this page.
Each of the Scrutiny Sub-Committees also carries out detailed, usually time-limited investigations into various aspects of the Council’s work or issues which affect local communities.
As part of the scrutiny process, we encourage and very much welcome public views on these issues. You can find out more about the areas we are looking at, or will examine in the near future, by clicking on the links below to take you to the information pages for each of the Sub-Committees. The work programme for each Sub-Committee is set out in its pages, together with brief details of the areas being scrutinised.

You can also speak in person to someone in the Scrutiny Team here at County Hall by telephoning:
0191-3833149 or Minicom 0191-3833802
Alternatively you can fax us on 0191-3834206
To show how much we value your views, every two months we will select the name of an individual who has sent us their comments about an issue we are scrutinising, or suggested a topic we should investigate. The successful person will receive £25 in vouchers. The Chairman and Vice-Chairmen of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee will make the selection and will be looking for the most helpful comments to assist the Council in improving its services. Sensible comments only please! (Sorry, this offer does not apply to employees of Durham County Council)
Scrutiny doesn't deal with individual concerns, queries or complaints. If we receive these, we will forward them on to the appropriate Department. You can find a link to all Council Departments here. If you are unhappy about a service you have received from the County Council please use the complaints procedure. You can find out more about the complaints procedure and making online complaints here.

If you do wish to participate in one of the public sessions we hold when scrutinising particular issues, our aim is to make you feel as comfortable as possible with the process. You can view our guide for witnesses here.
To ensure that we continuously improve our scrutiny process, we also ask witnesses who give evidence to complete an evaluation form.
