A Lifetime of Man■s Apathy

An exhibition by Derek Slater. My paintings deal with the diverse predicaments that have befallen the planet in my lifetime. Being born in 1948 it was a period when we had long hard winters that killed all manner of germs, spring when vegetation would start and flourish followed by long hot summer days. This would allow us to walk in nearby woodland and swim in local lakes. Sadly the woodlands have been reduced and the lakes drained due to the abundance of cars and a rising population that requires more land for roads and housing. However this abuse of the environment is worldwide as man destroys the ozone layer, forests and oceans along with the wildlife. My paintings are a chronicle of personal feelings and the events, which I see more frequently, in man's quest to destroy the planet for greed rather than need. Derek Slater, July 2008

Titchy/Kitschy is the result of the artists' residency in the remote village of Toge (a rice village in NW Japan), aimed at exploring how villagers could adapt to new ways of living, and how artists could be 'useful' in this community. Titchy/Kitschy questions how rural villages might promote themselves.

Eleanor Moreton - Durham Cathedral Artist in Residence 2008

Eleanor Moreton paints an imaginary world of woods, princes, queens and cottages. The fairytale world that Moreton creates alludes to German Romanticism and psychoanalytic theory, both of which have explored the theme of the unhomely (or uncanny). But her position is always one of ambivalence, both desiring the imaginary and knowing that it is a desire that cannot be fulfilled.
