Exhibition PolicyExhibition PlanningThe Durham Art Gallery consists of two galleries: one offering 58m. of wall space (180mē) and another with 35m. (76mē), plus a small Print Room with 25m. (35mē) of space. There is no permanent art collection and the programme features a regularly changing series of exhibitions related to all aspects of the visual arts, along with illustrated talks, films, workshops, demonstrations, concerts and other events aimed at a wide range of visitors and special interest groups. The main gallery displays change monthly and include major touring exhibitions from the South Bank Centre, Photographers’ Gallery and other national and regional centres, as well as exhibitions arranged directly by gallery staff. Over the years these have included exhibitions of painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, film and fantasy, textile arts and ceramics, car and furniture design, book illustration, ethnography and architecture. There have been a number of successful touring exhibitions initiated by the gallery (eg Mervyn Peake, Beryl Cook) and it has hosted several artist-in-residence schemes. The small Print Room area serves principally as a venue for solo exhibitions by contemporary artists, usually local, although work is regularly shown by artists outside the area. Contemporary ArtAn average of twenty varied exhibitions are held in the main galleries each year - these cover a wide range of the visual arts, of which only a very small proportion are of contemporary painting and sculpture. With the exception of the annual exhibition from the artist-in-residence at Durham Cathedral and major displays featuring (inter)nationally known artists, these tend to be thematic rather than solo exhibitions, or members’ work from established groups.Transport, insurance and publicity for the main gallery exhibitions is organised from the gallery and the gallery staff would expect to arrange and hang the displays. Artists showing in the Print Room would need to make their own arrangements for transport, publicity etc, although gallery staff would arrange and hang the work. The gallery exhibition programme is determined by the gallery staff and is planned two years ahead. Artists, groups or tour organisers interested in showing work in the gallery should send a written application and slides/photographs in the first instance to James Lowther at the DLI Museum & Durham Art Gallery, Aykley Heads, Durham DH1 5TU. Draft Policy DocumentThe principal aim of the gallery is to provide a centre for artistic activity in the region through the provision of a varied programme of quality exhibitions and events related to all aspects of the visual arts, for the benefit of the local community and visitors to the area, and to enhance the image of the county to outside agencies. The exhibitions will be of local, national and international interest and will be borrowed or hired from artists, collectors, public and private collections, regional and national galleries and touring agencies. These will be displayed in a modern facility offering first rate security and environmental conditions. A parallel programme of arts activities and workshops will be organised to make the exhibitions more accessible to members of the public, to provide opportunities for educational and cultural development and to broaden the centre’s appeal to a wider audience. The Print Room will provide local contemporary artists with the opportunity to show exhibitions of their work in an established art gallery. The gallery will provide a resource for information and advice related to the visual arts for the public, for departments within the authority, for members of the public and for outside organisations. AudiencesWithin a two year period the programme will be targeted towards audiences of:
