The Battle of the Somme lasted from July to November 1916. The attack stopped the Germans destroying the French Army at Verdun. When the battle ended the British Army had suffered 400,000 casualities. The 'Memorial to the Missing' at Thiepval in France lists the names of thousands of British soldiers still missing today somewhere on the Somme Battlefield.
