School work experience and work related learning provision

Durham Education Business Partnership (EBP) aims to bring business and education together.

Working with schools across County Durham, Darlington and the North East region, our objective is to enrich the education of students and to enhance their employability skills. We achieve this by producing and facilitating a range of high quality work related programmes which bring together students and representatives from the business world.

Key to our success is the excellent support we receive from local businesses. To maintain the quality of our service and to work with more students, we are constantly seeking to increase the number of organisations working with us.

Durham EBP offers a wide range of work-related learning activities which connect what students are taught in school, with the world of work. Our aim is to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed for adult and working life.

Our catalogue and price list are available to download.

Work related learning activities

Our range of work related learning activities we co-ordinate include:

  • Organising interactive careers events in schools. Employers are invited to offer students the opportunity to experience activities from the world of work.  Options can include engineering tasks, catering, crime scene investigation, etc.
  • Finding speakers from industry to talk to students about different aspects of their job role and organisation.  These sessions make students aware of the qualifications needed for different careers and the progression pathways available.
  • Organising workplace visits for students, to raise awareness of career opportunities and the world of work.
  • Bespoke one-off events tailored to meet individual school requirements.

Work experience

Work experience placements offer an opportunity for young people to gain an insight into the world of work, by participating in daily workplace tasks on an employer's premises. We arrange work experience placements for students from years 10 to 13.

Placements are offered on a block basis, usually for one or two weeks, or an extended programme which can be one or two days a week over a number of terms. We have an extensive database of employers willing to support County Durham schools with offers of work experience.

A logbook is provided as part of our service to enable students to make the most of their opportunity. It includes information on health and safety at work, a diary section and a range of exercises designed to maximise the learning experience.

Employer engagement

The employer engagement role of the EBP is to broker relationships between employers and schools to develop new innovative work experience and work-related learning activity that meets the needs of employers and schools.

Professional development placements

Professional development placements are a valuable means of helping school staff to develop their understanding of the world of work beyond school.  We work with a wide range of employers to offer professional development days which aim to raise awareness of a range of opportunities in a variety of industries.  These are offered as group placements or can be tailored for individual needs.
