Durham Coast and Lowlands LEADER


The Durham Coast and Lowlands area covers the majority of East Durham including Castle Eden, Easington and Murton and the south lowlands area of the county including Sedgefield, Newton Aycliffe, Ferryhill and Coxhoe. The west boundary includes Sherburn, Shincliffe, Pittington, and East and West Rainton.

Who is eligible?

If you or your organisation falls into one of the categories below, you may be eligible to apply for funding.

  • farmers
  • horticultural producers
  • landowners 
  • micro and small businesses
  • someone looking to start a business 
  • community groups
  • local authorities
  • charities
  • public-private partnerships
  • non-governmenal organisations
  • organisations promoting tourism in a specific area

What can the funding pay for?

Example of items that the funding may be available for:

  • Farming equipment and machinery
  • Construction of improvement to buildings
  • Intangible investments (e.g. computer software)
  • Patents, licenses, copyrights, trademarks
  • General costs, such as architect, engineer or consultant fees
  • Marketing and promotion

Which areas qualify for funding?

To check if you are in an area that is eligible for funding:

In addition to being in a qualifying area, your project must fall under one of the priorities below:

  • increasing farm productivity
  • supporting farm diversification
  • starting or developing a rural micro or small business
  • supporting rural tourism
  • supporting services in rural areas
  • developing or maintaining a cultural or heritage project
