Local History Societies

There are many volunteers throughout County Durham who have got together to form local history societies with the aim of preserving their local history and heritage for present and future generations. Although membership of these groups may vary in size the smaller groups are no less active in collecting artefacts, photographs and documents of local interest.
To get in touch with your local society, or other societies within County Durham, take a look at the local history section. on the Community Information On-line Database.

How well do you know the area in which you live or work? What was your village or town like 100, 50 or even 10 years ago? Would you like to find out more? One informal and sociable way to find out more is to go along to a local history society meeting or to one of their exhibitions. If you enjoy it you can always go back for more!
