Heritage Lottery Fund grants awarded

Local history and community groups in County Durham have been successful in obtaining grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund to run some exciting heritage projects over the next few years.

The grant to Handen Hold Miners' Banner Group will mean that a new banner will be paraded at the 2008 Miners' Gala, forty years after the colliery closed. A range of activities and events will be included in the project.

The Coxhoe Together Residents Group's project will research, record, and highlight the diverse heritage that can be found within Coxhoe churchyard. The village's history over the last two centuries is reflected in the churchyard and this will provide the basis for school projects, heritage trails, the formation of a history group and much more.

Keep an eye open for publicity relating to these projects, and other local projects, over the coming months.

Military Memories wanted!

Do you have memories of the military presence in Teesdale, or experience of military life in the area? If so, the Memories of Stainton Grove Military Camp project would like to hear from you. The camp was built during World War 2 and was operational until the early 1970s. It is one of the few remaining camps of the time. The aim of the project is to record memories both miliary and from the home front and use them to create information panels along with a self-guided heritage walk leaflet that will highlight the importance of the camp. Further information from Eileen O'Hara, Project Manager. Also see the Events page.

New Website Launched!

The Durham Amateur Football Trust (DAFT) has recently launched a new website to celebrate the golden age of soccer. Generally acknowledged as the high point of amateur football in England, and particularly in County Durham, the 1940s and 50s saw Bishop Auckland wining the F. A. Amateur Cup on numerous occasions. Photographs and memories will be added to the site over the coming months.
