Rules of Thumb

Do Not Pollute

Rules of Thumb

Key Indicator / Prompt
  • Understand pollution risks.
Plan to manage potential pollution from day one.
Analyse potential sources of pollution and identify measures to minimise their impact through the development process.

  • Take special care with dirty water run off; rivers and streams are particularly vulnerable.
Have you identified the location and quality of existing water courses and surface water?
Have you identified the source, route and destination of polluted flows?
Have you put measures in place to protect water sources from pollution? And to monitor their quality throughout the project?

  • Use common sense site management, in a methodical way.
Have you created a site management plan that is based on ways of working that minimise pollution? Think about potential sources of pollution - can you change working practice to minimise pollution risk? If not, locate these polluting works in the lease sensitive area on the site.

  • Manage the site waste consciously and carefully to avoid not just pollution but also prosecution.
Is there a waste management plan that highlights action to be taken for all types of waste?

  • Plan to avoid construction noise impacts.
Have you planned for minimum noise disruption - by type of machinery used and the timing of workings? Where noise is unavoidable, are measures in place to ensure the health and safety of employees and local people.

  • Plan to minimise light pollution.
Specify energy saving lighting that also avoids pollution, i.e. reduce sky glow and light trespass.

The above 'Rules of Thumb' relate to 'Not Polluting' within the Sustainability Guide.
