Improvements to North Road in Durham City get underway in October 2016 as part of a programme of investment into the roads and footpaths across the city.
The improvement works will include replacement of paving, the creation of wider areas for outdoor seating, and alterations to the road layout to improve traffic flow and road safety.
The following diagram illustrates the changes during the works.
Work carried out so far has uncovered an old, reinforced concrete road below the surface of the street as well as six coal chutes outside of the former cinema building, which has resulted in the works taking longer than expected.
We are working very hard, both during the day and overnight to help minimise the delay and work is now expected to finish by 1 May 2017.
Pedestrian access to shops and businesses will continue throughout the works. There will be footpath diversions at times and these will be signed. Work will only take place outside one or two businesses at a time.
The section of North Road between the junctions with Neville Street and Millburngate will be closed to vehicle traffic.
Buses that would normally travel along the one way section of North Road (towards the bottom of the street, away from the bus station) will be diverted up North Road to the roundabout (near the viaduct).
There will be two temporary bus stops on North Road, outside the front of the bus station and the Methodist Church. The bus stops on Millburngate (opposite The Gates Shopping Centre) will be suspended during the works.
Taxi ranks will be available on North Road and at Millburngate.
