Find information about funding schemes available to support small retail businesses.

Below are details of just two of the schemes we are delivering directly to the retail sector.

We can help you source funding from a range of partners and schemes depending on your geographical area and business needs.

Targeted business support - premises improvements

Available to support new business into premises, bring back into use derelict or underused retail space and encourage business growth.

Funding is awarded with the following aims in mind:

  • to improve economic activity across the county's retail centres,
  • to generate investment,
  • to generate employment and training opportunities,
  • to contribute towards the overall environmental quality of a town centre by improving the design and appearance of business premises.

What's available?

Funding can be awarded for external works as follows:

  • Major schemes - 70% of cost up to a maximum of £20,000.
  • Minor schemes - 50% of cost up to a maximum of £5,000.

Internal works may also be considered alongside the external works.

Street market trading - opportunities for new starts and business growth

Market traders support schemeA support package for business communities, producers, future entrepreneurs and existing independent retail businesses to access to trading opportunities on street markets at Chester-le-Street and Stanley.

If you're a start-up, entrepreneur, home worker or online business this provides a low risk, low cost opportunity to market test products to customers face-to-face.

If you're an existing street market trader this provides funding towards increasing the size of your stall and the opportunity to introduce new stock.

What's available?

For new businesses:

  • up to 50% of the funding required to purchase stalls and tarpaulin covers
  • a 50% contribution to membership of the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF) for 12 months so that new businesses meet legal requirements to trade
  • facilitation of a "shared pitch" scheme for new businesses to reduce initial set up costs, renting space and stock requirements
  • contribution towards pitch fees for up to three months
  • advice and guidance from us

For existing street market businesses:

  • up to 50% of the funding required for new tarpaulins, larger stalls, new signage and banners through the Targeted Market Improvements scheme.
