Flood strategy consultation

We consulted on a proposed Local Flood Risk Management Strategy for County Durham in 2016.

Local Flood Risk Management Strategy

The Local Flood Risk Management Strategy (LFRMS) for Durham sets out a countywide strategy for managing the risks of local flooding.

Strategy aims to:

  • understand flood risk in County Durham
  • lessen flood risk
  • increase resilience to flood risk

The LFRMS will help to ensure that the Environment Agency, Northumbrian Water Ltd, ourselves and other partners work together to help protect the people and businesses of County Durham from flooding.

It also explains how it supports other plans and policies, both within County Durham and on a national scale. Wider environmental objectives are considered as part of the Icon for pdf Strategic Environmental Assessment Scoping Report (PDF, 2.0mb)  prepared alongside this report.

Consultation Outcome

Following consideration of feedback to the consultation, the Local Flood Risk Management Strategy (LFRMS) has now been approved. See Strategic Flood Risk Assessment for further information.

Next steps

The strategy will be formally reviewed on a six yearly cycle in line with Durham's Icon for pdf Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment (PDF, 578.9kb) update required under the Flood Risk Regulation
