Mental Health and Wellbeing - Health Needs Assessment

In 2016 we asked for views on the mental health needs of County Durham residents and whether the existing services met those needs.

The Mental Health and Wellbeing Health Needs Assessment helps us to understand the mental health and wellbeing needs of everyone in County Durham, including high risk groups, and find out whether existing services meet current demands. Its role is to:

  • Identify how many people in County Durham currently have experience of poor mental health including mental illness and how this may change in the future.
  • Identify how many people feel happy in County Durham.
  • Review services or activities that improve mental health and wellbeing and prevent poor mental health.
  • Identify services that are currently delivered and any gaps.
  • Set up more preventative measures that could reduce demand for services, increase good mental health and reduce need for primary and secondary care interventions.
  • Identify if people with poor mental health also have poor physical health.
  • Identify how poor mental health can affect people's physical health.

It also aims to help us plan and develop future services and seeks to change views around mental health, so that people with mental health problems have maximum opportunities and live well.

You said, we did

The closing date for comments was the 25 June 2016. Thank you to everyone who responded.

The feedback received helped us to understand current services and people's needs, however, after the survey started, responsibility for developing the Mental Health and Wellbeing Health Needs Assessment was transferred to the two Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) which cover County Durham and Darlington.
