DLI Collection exhibition: When The Bugle Calls

The current touring exhibition from Durham County Council and The Trustees of the DLI, When the Bugle Calls, explores the role of the regimental band in the British Army. It follows on from Somme 1916: From Durham to the Western Front which was produced in 2016, and is the second exhibition theme in a series of five annual exhibitions we are showcasing using objects and archival material belonging to the trustees of the Durham Light Infantry Collection.

With the story of the Durham Light Infantry's band and bugles at its heart, the display looks at military music throughout history - from its use as a tool for communicating battlefield commands, to ceremonial purposes, and how it came to shape regimental traditions.

It also tells the tale of individual soldiers and how music helped them rally their regiments, keeping morale alive in the darkest and most dangerous of times, and helping their spirits triumph. Two centuries of military history are explored, from the earliest regimental musicians, to buglers in the Crimea, the lives of "band boy" soldiers and how Abide With Mecame to be the DLI's regimental hymn.

The DLI Collection's free touring exhibition has welcomed over a thousand visitors to Bishop Auckland Town Hall since it opened in December and has moved to its next location at Stanhope Durham Dales Centre. The exhibition will be available to view every day, from 20 April until 10 June, 11.00am to 4.00pm.
