DLI Collection exhibition: When The Bugle Calls
The current touring exhibition from Durham County Council and The Trustees of the DLI, When the Bugle Calls, explores the role of the regimental band in the British Army.
With the story of the Durham Light Infantry's band and bugles at its heart, the display looks at military music throughout history - from its use as a tool for communicating battlefield commands, to ceremonial purposes, and how it came to shape regimental traditions.
It also tells the tale of individual soldiers and how music helped them rally their regiments, keeping morale alive in the darkest and most dangerous of times, and helping their spirits triumph.
The exhibition in Bishop Auckland Town Hall is open during library opening hours. Admission is free.
Using sights, sounds and hands-on activities, When the Bugle Calls draws on the DLI Collection to tell the story of Durham County's regimental band, recounting the exciting story of how the bugle became the symbol of the regiment.
