Broadband consultation

We looked for broadband wholesale providers to let us know about superfast broadband in the region.

Background

Digital Durham has been working since 2010 to get superfast broadband to County Durham, Gateshead, Sunderland and Tees Valley (Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees). Since 2014 it has also been working in North and South Tyneside to develop similar services.

Working in partnership with Broadband Delivery (BDUK), part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Digital Durham has contracts with broadband suppliers who receive public funding to provide superfast broadband into areas where it is unavailable.

Decisions on where this public funding is targeted are made following consultation and state aid approval.

What were we asking about?

When the targets for take up of superfast broadband are met and/or if there is an underspend, then there is provision in the contract to reinvest remaining funds into delivering access to superfast broadband to other areas where it is not yet available.

To ensure that we invest in the right areas, we must first carry out consultation with broadband wholesale providers.

Latest consultation

This consultation was aimed at broadband wholesale providers. The closing date for feedback was Thursday 1 September 2016 at 5.00pm.
