Financial support for foster carers
Find out about the fees and allowances paid to foster carers.
What kind of financial support is available?
There are two types of financial support available to foster carers: an age related fostering allowance for the child and a payment for the skills of the foster carer.
All foster carers receive a fostering allowance based on the age of the child placed with them. The allowance will help you to cover the cost of caring for a child and includes clothing, food and pocket money.
Payment for skills
This payment is dependent on your skills and experience. It is based on a series of levels. Support and training is available to help foster carers develop their skills and experience so that they can progress through the banding.
Self-employment - you're responsible for paying your tax bill
Foster carers are self-employed and you will be responsible for paying your own tax and any contributions depending on your circumstances. You may be entitled to 'Qualifying Care Relief' on your income contributions. The Fostering Network and HM Revenue and Customs offer training and support to foster carers to help you complete the relevant documents.
