North East devolution - what do you think?

Should County Durham sign up to a North East Devolution Deal? Find out what's on offer, why it matters to the region and let us know what you think.

An information pack and questionnaire about the North East devolution deal are being sent to all residents who were on the electoral register as of 1 December 2015. You will receive the information between 13 and 19 January 2016.

Please take a few minutes to read the information and respond to the short questionnaire by 5.00pm on Monday 8 February.

About the devolution deal

The Government wants to devolve some powers and resources to the North East as part of a devolution agreement. If it goes ahead, the devolution agreement would see more decisions made locally and additional funding available to bolster the region's economy. We would have an elected mayor who will work with the North East Combined Authority.

Have your say

We're sending information and poll papers to all residents registered to vote in the county as of 1 December 2015. The packs and questions have been compiled by Durham University and the poll is being conducted by the Electoral Reform Services.

Fill in the online questionnaire (you will need the two-part security code contained in the printed copy of the questionnaire you have received).

Return your questionnaire in the pre-paid envelope provided.

Poll closes at 5.00pm on Monday 8 February 2016.

What happens next

The seven local councils in the area, including Durham, recently signed a proposed agreement to go ahead with this deal. But that isn't a final agreement.  We will only make a final decision after we've consulted you.

The results of the poll will be reported to the Full Council on 24 February 2016.
