Consultation to merge Bowes Hutchinson's CE (Voluntary Aided) Primary School and Startforth Morritt Memorial CE (Voluntary Controlled) Primary School

This page details a proposal to merge Bowes Hutchinson's CE (Voluntary Aided) Primary School and Startforth Morritt Memorial CE (Voluntary Controlled) Primary School on existing sites from 1 September 2015.

Why has this been proposed?

The two schools are very small primary schools. We believe that the long term viability of small schools is uncertain due to changes in the national school funding arrangements.

Since 2013/14, funding has been allocated to schools based mainly on the number of pupils at the school and pupil need. The changes also mean that we are restricted in what additional financial support we can provide for small schools.

Merging schools means more opportunities for efficiency and a single school, with the combined numbers of two small schools, provides greater financial stability. The proposal to merge the schools will lead to a larger and more viable education establishment.

Full details on the proposal are set out in the  Icon for pdf Bowes Hutchinson and Startforth Morritt Schools - consultation document (PDF, 854.3kb) .

The public consultation ran from 9 March 2015 to 3 April 2015.

Decision

Following the consultation, and after considering the views of those who responded, the decision was taken not to move forward with the proposal.
