Durham Road User Charge Zone (congestion charge)

The zone is on the Durham City peninsula, near Durham Cathedral and Castle, Durham Market Place, Durham Chorister School, Durham University colleges and a variety of shops and businesses.

The Durham Road User Charge Zone helps to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, and improves air quality in the area. It is also encourages out-of-hours use of the area, creating safer and more attractive streets for everyone.

How it works

It uses an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system at the junction of Saddler Street and Claypath. The ANPR system identifies vehicles subject to the charge.

The daily charge is between 10.00am and 4.00pm, Monday to Saturday. There is no charge on Sundays or bank holidays.

Paying the charge

The daily charge is £2. All vehicles that enter or exit the clearly defined zone during its hours of operation must pay the charge unless they qualify for an exemption.

You must pay the charge in advance or by 6.00pm on the day the road is used. If you don't pay the charge by 6.00pm on the day the road is used, this may result in a £50.00 penalty charge notice becoming payable by the registered keeper of the vehicle.

NSL collect the charge for us - you can go to the NSL website and select 'Durham & Darlington' from the drop down list for ways to pay, including at their Parking Shop.
