Musical instrument tuition
Our music support service provides musical opportunities for pupils throughout County Durham and Darlington.
We have about 60 teachers who each week teach more than 5,000 children. We run over 40 ensembles, ranging from orchestras, wind bands and choirs, to big bands and folk fiddle groups which form part of a structured programme of musical development.
Our ensembles perform regularly and our senior ensembles have performed in national competitions at the highest level. All pupils are invited to join an ensemble once they reach the required standard.
We run a concert programme for schools and organise special events to involve pupils in music-making. We work with young people of all ages from reception to young adults in small groups or in whole classes.
The ability to play an instrument is something that will stay with your child for the rest of their lives. Playing and singing will not only increase their understanding and enjoyment of music, it can also:
- help social skills
- build teamwork
- increase self-confidence
- give opportunities to perform
- be a fulfilling hobby that can open up new opportunities
- give children a head start in music lessons, from primary school to GCSE, AS and A-level
Research has shown that children who play an instrument also perform better in other subjects.
Commitment and encouragement
Playing an instrument or singing takes commitment. Pupils need to bring their instrument to every lesson and will need to play or sing regularly at home. They will need support and encouragement and there may be times when they find it difficult. Remember that they will not be able to play tunes straight away and that the early stages may not sound wonderful.
There are charges for lessons and for the hire of an instrument. They are currently:
- Lessons - £49.50 per term
- Hire of an instrument - £33.50 per term
For those eligible for free school meals on income grounds:
- Lessons £36.50 per term*
- Hire £8.50 per term*
*In many schools funding is used to support the cost of tuition and hire and there is no charge. Please check with your child's school.
