Future Focus - support with workforce planning


Workforce planning can help you meet the changing needs and future opportunities for your business. Being able to better plan for the future and develop succession planning strategies within your organisation is key to ensuring you are able to recruit and retain staff effectively.

In response to COVID-19, we have changed the way we deliver training following guidance Skills for Care: COVID-19 - Essential training.

We will now offer training in a range of ways using digital resources where possible. We continue to offer a range of distance learning courses.

This is why the Care Academy are delivering a programme that will support you as managers to embed a culture of effective workforce planning and staff development within your organisation.

We have commissioned 30 training places for registered managers and 30 training places for aspiring managers on this programme.

The programme is split into two phases followed by an evaluation:

  • Phase 1: 10 week professional and organisational development programme for registered managers.
  • Phase 2: Skills for Care "Lead to Succeed" programme for aspiring managers and leaders (employers can claim up to £500 per learner through the Care Academy's Workforce Development Fund (WDF) to support this activity).

Phase 1- Registered Managers

You will be required to attend a total of 4 interactive webinars followed by an evaluation session.

It is expected that the training will result in all managers completing:

  • a baseline assessment of succession planning
  • an organisational action plan
  • identified a staff member to participate in Phase 2 - a further programme of work completing the Skills for Care 'Lead to Succeed' qualification for aspiring leaders

You will have the opportunity for 1:1 coaching and support with one of the Access Skills coaches who will support you in the development of your organisation plans.

Details of the programme are as follows: Individuals will be required to undertake guided self-study and reflection, supported by a drop-in sessions with tutor and peers throughout to support their learning.

Introduction to Workforce Planning

By the end of this session participants will understand:

  • the critical elements required to formulate a baseline assessment of their organisation
  • what a workforce plan is
  • the principles of workforce planning:
    • who should be involved
    • what to consider (factors impacting the Social Care Sector at a national/local and organisational level)
  • accessing and analysing:
    • information
    • how to carry out a SOAR analysis
  • understanding policies and procedures and how to access information/resources/systems using QCS, ASC-WDS, etc.

The process of workforce and succession planning

Recap and building on workshop one, participants will consider:

  • organisation values
  • identifying and developing talent pipelines
  • developing staff
  • developing learning pathways e.g. minimum standards/The Leadership Qualities Framework/Manager Induction Standard 

Developing talent pathways:

  • personal development plans/individual learning
  • enhance Performance management
  • incorporate values-based recruitment 

This process will assist in identifying a staff member to attend the Lead to Succeed programme.

Creating and implementing an organisational action plan

Using the knowledge and information acquired participants will:

  • consider, discuss and design a workforce development plan
  • analyse appropriate information to produce an empowering organisational action plan - plotting the design, co-ordination, implementation and delivery of their workforce development plan that contributes to organisational capacity stability and sustainably.

Summary and Action Plan
 
Participants will review and evaluate the results of their planning and the impact that it has made to their organisations.

They will share their findings with peers and through feedback and discussion will refine and renew their action plan, incorporating the new learning and enabling further growth. 

You will have the opportunity to book an appointment with the consultant to help finalise your action plan following the webinar.

Evaluation

This session is for all participants

Project Evaluation 

This facilitated session will enable participants to share their experiences of the project, establishing impact and lessons learnt. 

This feedback will provide the opportunity to:

  • Help inform and contribute to effective strategies and the creation of Independent Care Sector Comact (ICSTC).
  • Harness the sectors commitment to workforce development and provide a basis for Leadership and Management Training Programmes Action Plan to be developed.
  • Identify commissioning priorities.
  • Develop an Aspiring Leaders Programme.

Lead to Succeed

This is the secondary part of the Future Focus - Management and Leadership programme 

This programme is designed to help aspiring leaders and managers to develop their leadership and management potential.

This is a four day programme delivered one full day per month, with time allocated to students inbetween sessions to implement learning in the work environment.

The programme will teach how successful behaviours and practical strategies can support leaders in their day to day work, as well as considering how they could implement these behaviours and strategies, now and in the future.

To be eligible for this programme you need to have been elected by a manager completing the Future Focus - Management and Leadership programme.
