Bringing West End wonder to County Durham

Published January 13, 2020 11.09am

Musical theatre fans can enjoy the magic of the West End in the heart of County Durham this year, including special dementia friendly film screenings.

Kinky boots

Screenings of Kinky Boots The Musical will take place at the Gala Theatre in Durham in February

Kinky Boots - The Musical, The Chicago Blues Brothers, Singin' in the Rain, Oklahoma! - The Gala Theatre and Cinema's spring programme is packed full of spectacular show tunes.

A screening of the much-loved film Singin' in the Rain will kick start the fun on Friday 17 January. Part of the Gala's Classic Cinema Studio series, this matinee performance at 2pm will be the first dementia friendly screening at the Durham City venue. Audiences will be seated around cabaret style tables with drinks and snacks available throughout and low lighting rather than the usual dark cinema room. The sound will not be too loud while still audible for the hard of hearing, toilets and exits will be clearly signposted and the Gala's dementia-friendly trained staff will be on hand. Tickets cost £5.

For more information or to book tickets visit the Gala Theatre and Cinema website or call 03000 266 600.

Dazzle and delight

From a timeless classic, to a relative newcomer, Kinky Boots - The Musical is set to dazzle and delight on Thursday 4 February at 7pm and Sunday 9 February at 3pm. The show sees factory owner Charlie join forces with the fabulous entertainer Lola to create a line of sturdy stilettos unlike any the world has ever seen. Filmed live at London's Adelphi Theatre, the cinematic screening captures all the energy of the West End performance, transporting audiences from the factory floor of Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan.

Tickets cost £15, £13 for concessions and £10 for Gala members.

More musical mayhem is in store on Saturday 26 January at 7.30pm when the Chicago Blues Brothers arrive in town with their hit show, A Night at the Movies. Direct from London's West End, this live all singing, all dancing hit parade features an 11-piece band and some of the greatest movie anthems of all time.

Tickets cost £25 or £15 for concessions and children under 14.

Even more choice

Robin Byers, Gala Theatre manager, said: "By hosting touring productions and theatrical screenings we can provide even more choice to the people of County Durham, ensuring they don't have to leave the region to experience the wonders of the West End."

Other upcoming musical highlights include Durham University Light Opera Group's production of Oklahoma!, which runs at the Gala from Tuesday 21 to Saturday 25 January, and The Cabaret Café on Sunday 9 February. Presented by the Gala Theatre Stage School, the latter will take the audience on a journey through musical history, from the works of Cole Porter to present day successes such as Hamilton.

And later in the year, from Tuesday 19 to Saturday 23 May, Durham Musical Theatre Company will bring Chess the Musical to the Gala stage.
