Health protection

Health protection is a term we use to describe the range of actions carried out by our public health service to protect residents in our county.

For the latest information and advice on the Coronavirus go to the NHS Corona virus webpage. The latest advice from Government is available at Gov.uk: coronavirus - latest information and advice.

Health protection covers:

  • screening programmes
  • immunisation programmes
  • prevention and management of outbreaks and infectious diseases
  • preparing and responding to public health incidents and emergencies

Health protection is a joint responsibility across various bodies including councils, NHS England, Public Health England and Clinical Commissioning Groups.

This page will be used to advise and communicate any health protection announcements.

Screening

Screening is a way of finding out if people are at higher risk of a health problem, so that early treatment can be offered or information given to help them make informed decisions. Screening programmes include antenatal and newborns, diabetic eye, cervical, breast and bowel screening.

More information on screening programmes can be found on Gov.uk: Population screening programmes and on the Screening saves lives website. Remember you can also speak to your GP surgery or Pharmacist if you have a particular question.

Immunisations

Immunisation reduces the risk of infections and diseases. The NHS provide guides to help you understand the vaccines offered in the UK and when to have them. It also explains how they work and why they're safe and important.

Diseases that are preventable through vaccination include:

  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella
  • Flu
  • Pneumonia
  • Shingles
  • Meningitis
  • Whooping Cough
  • Hepatitis B
  • HPV - cancers caused by human papillomavirus

For further information about immunisations go to NHS vaccinations.
