Sudden and suspicious deaths

In certain circumstances the registrar may report a death to the coroner.

Coroners are chosen by us.

By law, the coroner looks into the following:

  • violent/sudden deaths
  • unnatural deaths
  • the person who's died was subject to a Depravation of Liberty Order
  • deaths as a result of an industrial disease
  • cause of death is unknown
  • deaths in prison or other state detention (eg immigration centres).

They will then hold an inquest (a court hearing to find out the cause of death) if one is needed. In certain circumstances the registrar may report a death to the coroner.

The Durham and Darlington Coroner website provides more information about inquests, how to contact the Coroner's Officers and opening hours.
