Courses for childminders


Book one of our courses for childminders.

Before you become a childminder, you must complete our pre-registration course - see our Become a childminder page for course details.

Book a place online through our Provider Portal for any of the courses listed below. If you are not already registered on the Provider Portal contact us.

All courses are available free of charge to childminders registered in the County Durham area.  Some of these courses are open to Ofsted registered childminders in other areas at a fee.  Please contact us for details.

Poverty proofing the pre-school day

Poverty affects nearly one in three children today. This session will help you identify the financial barriers parents may face which can impact children's learning. The training will be a mix of discussion and practical activities to implement in your setting to poverty proof your practice.

Autumn briefing for childminders

A twice yearly information briefing including national updates and current topics, specifically for childminders.

Child sexual exploitation

This course will increase your awareness of child sexual exploitation and provide you with a greater understanding of the issues and processes so that children and young people can be safeguarded. You must have completed a level two safeguarding course within the last three years to attend this course.

The Solihull Approach for childminders

The two day Solihull Approach foundation course introduces the Solihull Approach to professionals working with families with children under 5 years. It focuses on baby brain development, containment, reciprocity and behaviour management.  The Solihull Approach (the first five years) resource packs will be provided for training only. Should you wish to purchase your own copy to use in your setting these can be ordered from the Solihull Approach Parenting website.

Level two safeguarding systems and processes

This course will help you develop a shared understanding of the processes, principles, roles and responsibilities outlined in national and local guidance for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Art without the clart

The world is full of beautiful creative works of art - famous and not so much. Explore a multitude of resources and materials that could be used to re-create famous works of art...or make a masterpiece of your own in this hands-on workshop. A wealth of learning happens when children become creative, yet we don't always give it the focus it deserves - come and experience it for yourselves.

We are excited to deliver this training in a brand new venue!  St John's Hall is a bright and spacious community hall; ideal for a practical art course like this one! 


The toxic QUAD

This course will increase your understanding of and professional response to parental substance misuse, domestic abuse, parental mental health issues and parental learning disabilities/difficulties (the toxic QUAD) and their potential impact on parenting capacity and on children's health, development and wellbeing. You must have completed a level two safeguarding course within the last three years to attend this course.

Safeguarding children with additional needs

This course will support you to recognise the increased vulnerability of children with additional needs and to understand how to take forward any safeguarding concerns. We will explore how attitudes and assumptions about SEN (special educational needs) or additional needs can act as barriers in the safeguarding system and how practitioners need to work robustly together to support children and their families. You must have completed a level two safeguarding course within the last three years to attend this course.
