Archaeology team

The Durham County Council Archaeology Section (DCCAS) cover the areas of Durham County Council and Darlington Borough Council.

Archaeology 1

Our main aims are to protect, record, research and interpret the archaeology and built heritage of County Durham and the Borough of Darlington for the benefit of local communities, researchers and visitors.

We aim to:

  • proactively protect, manage and conserve the archaeological remains of the area we cover
  • maintain and enhance the Historic Environment Record
  • widen access to archaeology through talks, exhibits and opportunities to experience hands-on archaeology
  • encourage individuals and groups to become involved with the archaeology of their local area.

We provide archaeological advice to:

  • developers
  • the local planning authorities of Durham and the Borough of Darlington
  • the forestry and agricultural sectors
  • utilities companies
  • members of the public

DCCAS has been in existence for many decades, and we have produced  Icon for pdf A history of the Archaeology section (PDF, 1.6mb)  which may be of interest.
