Coronavirus update

All register offices are closed to the public with effect from 30 March until further notice.

All birth registration appointments are cancelled until further notice. You can find out how to apply in advance for child benefit or universal credit before the birth is registered.

You can register a death through an appointment by telephoning 03000 266 000.

All ceremonies including weddings, civil partnerships, naming ceremonies and non-statutory celebrations have been suspended. Any queries in regards to ceremonies should be directed to theceremonyteam@durham.gov.uk.

Certificates can still be ordered online or by phone, see our Birth, death, marriage and civil partnership certificates page.

For all the latest information on how our services are affected, see our Changes to services: Births, marriages and deaths page.

Hold your celebration here

Our building is on the main road in a double-fronted Victorian end-terrace house. You can choose to hold your ceremony in:

  • the ceremony room which holds up to 25 people
  • the register office (for a less formal ceremony)

Parking is usually available on the main road and on smaller side roads. There is also a small public park opposite for photographs and for guests to congregate after the ceremony.

You can book ceremonies on weekdays, weekends or public holidays - contact us to find out what dates are available.
