Roadworks planned for Barnard Castle

Published February 23, 2018 3.46pm

A road closure is planned to begin next week on Queen Street, Barnard Castle, in order to allow roadworks to improve drainage and prevent surface flooding.

The works will start on Monday 26 February, and run for approximately three weeks.

John Reed, head of technical services, said: "Following recent flooding events, a study was undertaken by Northumbrian Water to investigate ways to prevent further flooding to properties near to the Hole in the Wall car park. From their results we have anticipated that the water travelling down Queen Street cannot get into the drainage system due to a lack of entry points and gullies.

"This scheme will therefore involve installing five new high-capacity gullies with larger outlets to intercept the water flow. We appreciate there will be some disruption, and we'd like to thank people in advance for their patience and understanding."

The road is scheduled to re-open on Sunday 18 March.
