Stainton Grove HWRC to be replaced with improved facility
We have unveiled plans to replace the Stainton Grove household waste recycling centre with an improved facility, providing a wider range of recycling facilities and making it easier to recycle household waste.
In addition to the improved household waste recycling centre, the site will also feature two brand new facilities: a shop where used goods will be sold on and an area of the site for small businesses to deposit trade waste.
Cllr Brian Stephens, our Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, said: "The existing household waste recycling centre at Stainton Grove near Barnard Castle is very small, limiting the range of commodities that can be deposited by residents. It is situated at the entrance to the existing depot and opening hours have had to be reduced to weekend opening only to reduce traffic problems.
"Funding is now in place to construct a replacement HWRC facility on the existing council depot site, adjacent to the current household waste recycling centre.
"The new facility will be much larger and will offer a wider range of waste and recycling facilities including a bigger HWRC for residents, trade recycling facilities, and a reuse shop on the site. The site will be open seven days a week."
To carry out the construction work, it will be necessary to close the existing household waste recycling centre on the site from Monday 9 April, for the duration of the work. During this time HWRC users will be directed to alternative household waste recycling centres to dispose of household waste.
The nearest alternative sites while Stainton Grove is closed are:
- Middleton in Teesdale DL12 0NG
- Romanway, Bishop Auckland DL14 9AW
- Heighington, Newton Aycliffe DL5 6AP
All three sites are open seven days a week from 9am to 3.30pm from October to March and from 9am to 6pm from April to September.
A mobile recycling site at Frosterley (DL13 2TL) also operates every other Saturday morning between 9am and 12 noon from 21 April.
Expected completion date
It is anticipated the new household waste recycling centre, shop and trade waste facilities will be open to the public towards the end of 2018.
Our depot facilities will continue to be present at the site throughout and on completion of the work.
