20mph part-time speed limit consultation 2017
We are consulting on proposals to introduce 20mph speed limits on roads in the vicinity of schools that have been identified as having the highest accident rates.
What are we planning to do?
- reduce the speed limit in the vicinity of identified schools to 20mph during school drop of and pick up times
- provide road safety education for children including road awareness and safe cycling programmes
- offer healthy lifestyle initiatives to encourage walking and cycling by the school children and the wider community
Part-time 20mph speed limits 'when school lights show' is a sign which advises that a length of road in the vicinity of a school entrance should be driven at 20mph or less when the lights are on. The introduction of the proposed new speed limits will affect all users of the roads in each location.
Why are we doing it?
The purpose of this scheme is to reduce traffic speeds around the schools during drop off and pick up times, which will improve road safety for vulnerable road users as well as making walking, cycling and outdoor play more attractive.
