Countryside volunteering

County Durham's countryside is beautiful and varied - encompassing the wild beauty of the moors, mysterious wooded dales, sweeping coastal scenery and wildlife havens nestled amongst urban areas.

If you are interested in helping us to look after the countryside in your spare time there are many opportunities for you to get involved, these include:

  • practical work - building steps, repairing paths, mending fences
  • helping with guided walks
  • picking litter
  • assisting at events
  • patrolling sites and footpaths and reporting any problems
  • tree planting
  • helping with environmental education

Our volunteers come in all shapes and sizes but share a common goal - to make a difference to their local countryside.  There's something to suit everyone and is a great way to learn new skills, make new friends and get fit.

Why not join us and make your own valuable contribution to improving the County Durham countryside?  We can't do it without your help.

What you must do

  • You don't need any skills or previous experience.  All necessary training, tools and equipment will be provided.
  • Contact us to discuss how you could get involved.
