First Board meeting
The first meeting of the Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership Board took place on 21 July.
The Board looked at action plans to address the priorities developed by local people at May's AAP launch meeting. The three main areas for the AAP to focus on over the coming year are:
-
environmental and street cleansing issues
-
support to the community and voluntary sector
-
activities for young people.
Sub-groups will be formed to work on the priorities.
The Board also chose its new chairperson - Brian Hall from the councillor section of the Board.
The Board was given a presentation highlighting the winter gritting routes and highways schemes available.
The Board also received a presentation on the City of Culture bid for the county, and were supportive of the initial bid to be submitted in December 2009.

Launch meeting - Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership
The launch meeting of the Newton Aycliffe Area Action Partnership (AAP) was held on 21 April. In all, 88 people attended the launch. Local councillors, council officers, representatives from local public services, voluntary and resident groups, and members of the public all attended on the night.
People had the chance to look at a range of information boards giving them details on their area (see the Area Action Partnerships information page for the boards).
People also had the chance to view some of the successes in their local area:

We also produced an 'area profile' for the partnership to give people more detail on the work going on in the area:

Issues on the night
Name
One of the major pieces of business for attendees at the AAP meeting was to choose the name of the partnership. The name chosen was ‘Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership’, which had a clear majority in the vote on the night. The acronym GAMP, means ‘large umbrella’, a good description for the partnership.
AAP priorities
A major part of the meeting was to develop priorities for the AAP to focus on over the next year. Issues discussed on the night included: improving community spirit and communication, unemployment, anti-social behaviour and educational attainment. The following areas were chosen as the key themes that Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership will consider over the next year. The themes are in order of priority:
- Environmental and Street Cleansing (36 votes)
- Support to Community and Voluntary (32 votes)
- Activities for Young People (29 votes)
- Town Centre Vitality (28 votes)
- Health and Lifestyles (22 votes)
- Improve Community Cohesion (18 votes)
- Unemployment levels (17 votes)
- Educational attainment (15 votes)
- Crime and Anti social behaviour (12 votes)
- Communication and Co-ordination (4 votes)
Excellent working relationships
One participant on the night said: “I represent a large voluntary sector organisation who are very interested in supporting the Area Action Partnerships across the county and we are therefore interested in seeing what priorities come out of each launch and how we can fit into any potential working groups.
“We have had an excellent working relationship with the former Sedgefield Borough Council and are keen to continue this with the new authority. Our organisation lends itself to several of the priorities identified at tonight’s event and we are now waiting to see how the board role out its actions.”
Next steps
The next step will be for a panel to select members for the AAP’s Board. To date, we have received nearly 40 expressions of interest for the seven public seats on the AAP Board (the Board will be made up of seven public representatives, seven elected members and seven representatives from partner organisations) and we will be looking to appoint Board members by the end of May/the beginning of June.
The first meeting of the Board will take place around the middle to back end of June. The date and venue will be confirmed soon. For the agenda and papers of the meeting, please check this web page at the start of June.
