Durham Hedgerow Partnership

The Durham Hedgerow Partnership brings together organisations and individuals committed to promoting the appreciation and conservation of hedgerows in the Durham Biodiversity Partnership area.

The partnership's aims include:  

  • raising awareness and promoting good practice
  • providing grants for hedgerow planting and renovation
  • generating income through sponsorship and partnerships
  • contributing to the Durham Biodiversity Action Plan for hedgerows
  • influencing the development of legislation and policy
  • undertaking and supporting hedgerow surveys.

Field Boundary Restoration Grant  

The partnership provides financial assistance for renovating and planting hedges through the Field Boundary Restoration Grant (FBRG) scheme. The grant is funded by County Durham Environment Trust.

The grant is available within the Durham Biodiversity Partnership area, which covers the local authority areas of County Durham, Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland and Darlington. 

It is administered by Tyne Tees Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) and Durham County Council. For more information, please download the FBRG leaflet below or contact the Natural Environment Team.

Hedgerow surveys  

In 2006, we carried out a survey of hedges in the Durham area supported by funding from DEFRA. You can view or download the results of the survey below:

County Durham hedgelaying and dry stone walling competition

This annual competition is being held at Beamish Museum on 16 October 2010 and is organised by Tyne Tees Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group and The Durham Hedgerow Partnership in affiliation with the National Hedgelaying Society. The competition aims to raise awareness and promote good practice in the skills and techniques of field boundary management.

Field Boundary Awards

This year we have launched the new Field Boundary Awards to recognise the skills of those who work to preserve Durham's walls and hedges for the benefit of farming, wildlife and the landscape.

The awards are open to any individual within the Durham Biodiversity Partnership Area which includes the local council areas of County Durham, Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland and Darlington.
